What are the benefits of becoming a member of the Ponderosa Guild?
Members have access to a rich diversity of activities, events, discounted course fees, equipment and library resources. Best of all is belonging to a welcoming, vibrant community of active makers with whom to share your love of fibre art and learning. We offer full, associate and student memberships.
How often does the guild meet, and where? Do I have to attend meetings to be a member?
The guild meets monthly from September to May, alternating between a Friday morning and Tuesday evening meeting. Currently, all our general meetings are being held by Zoom. Our calendar lists our meeting dates. You do not have to attend meetings to be a member, although we’d love for you to participate in our decision making and our "show and tell." If you’re interested in experiencing one of our meetings before joining, contact us.
Can I cancel my membership?
We do not offer refunds on member dues. If you wish to end your membership or stop receiving communications for members, you can unsubscribe at any time.
What if I am not local to Kelowna?
While many of our regular activities take place on site at our studio, there are several group meetings that currently occur on Zoom and we welcome participation from remote members. The majority of our members are on “Pacific Time.” If you live outside the Okanagan region, please contact us to discuss how we can accommodate you. An Associate Membership may be the best for you.
Can I try out the equipment before becoming a member?
You are welcome to come to the studio during drop-in hours to try out our equipment. Rentals are available for members only.
Where do I get my supplies if I want to start some fibre projects?
Guild members can provide you with information on sourcing local, national, and even international materials. Our guild prioritizes sustainable products whenever possible. We have members who raise their own sheep, llamas and alpacas who have fibre available for the group.
I have a business associated with fibre. May I advertise it?
We encourage our members to complete an online profile where they can write about their business and link to any relevant materials (personal websites, socials, etc). However, we discourage active advertising of products on our website, at our meetings or events.
What is the leadership structure of the guild?
Can I participate in guild votes?
All full members have a say in the direction of our group and vote at general meetings. Our policies and procedure bylaws guide our decision making process.
Can I participate in the Annual Artisan Sale?
All full members and student members can participate in the Annual Artisan Sale. All sale items must be reviewed in advance by a Standards Committee. Associate members can upgrade to a full membership at any time.
I'm just a beginner. Is the Ponderosa Guild a good place to learn?
Absolutely! The guild welcomes all levels of expertise. We can provide classes, books, equipment, materials and encouragement to help you learn your craft.
Do you offer youth instruction?
Do you include quilting in your guild?
We offer almost all things fibre (felting, spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting, basketry, embroidery), but not sewing or quilting. There are other guilds in the Okanagan dedicated to the art of quilting specifically.
